Big News: Paper Cups Are Now Recyclable!

The materials recovery facilities (MRFs) serving MA have officially moved ALL paper cups to the recycling YES list!

They were previously not recyclable because of the thin, protective, plastic  layer inside them (called a poly-coat), but thanks to improved technology, paper mills can now separate this coating from the paper.

The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection is excited to get the word out – please help spread the good news.

This change applies to paper cups, cold paper drink cups, and hot coffee paper cups. This includes paper cups labeled as “compostable”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do paper cups need to be rinsed out (beyond just being empty)?
A: Only rinse if there’s some kind of food residue in them. Otherwise, empty is good enough!
Q: Does this mean milk cartons are also recyclable?
A: No. Cartons and wet-strength containers (like pints of ice cream and butter boxes) are still not acceptable.
Q: If they have wax on the inside, are they still recyclable? What about compostable cups?
A: Yes! All cups made of paper are now recyclable.
Q: What changed?
A: Previously, paper cups were kept out of the recycling because of a protective layer inside (either wax or plastic). But with new technology, paper mills now have the ability to separate that coating from the paper. So recycle those paper cups!
Q: What about freezer boxes, paper plates, and other coated paper products?
A: These are still not accepted in curbside recycling. Wet strength boxes, like frozen food boxes, are designed to withstand moisture on all sides and have an embedded coating that makes them hard to break down.

Q: What about Paper plates, takeout containers, and food boats/trays?
A: They are still not recyclable because they are likely to have food on them. If the item is labeled “compostable” then it can be included in your curbside food scrap diversion cart. If it is not labeled “compostable” or if you do not participate in subscription curbside food scrap collection, then place these items in the trash.
