Arlington on Tap was initiated by Zero Waste Arlington to support the town’s new retail ban on single-use plastic bottled water and promote Arlington’s high quality tap water and build a network of refill stations.

Since its launch in May 2022, Arlington on Tap has been responsive to community feedback and the campaign has accomplished the following milestones:

  • State Representative Sean Garballey worked on Arlington’s behalf to secure $50,000 in the FY23 state budget specifically allocated to fund the installation of bottle refill stations in Arlington. We thank Representative Garballey for his proactive work and ongoing support of our efforts.
  • Zero Waste Arlington committee members have been actively working with town stakeholders to identify bottle refill station locations. The first success of this partnership is the planned installation of a refill station at Hurd Field which is currently being renovated. Additional sites are being discussed for a rollout by next summer.
  • In conjunction with our No Plastic, Please! campaign to reduce wasteful single-use plastic in restaurants, we are asking restaurants to refill customer’s reusable water bottles upon request. Participating businesses will be featured on the Arlington on Tap map.
  • Zero Waste Arlington’s Town Day bottle refill kiosk served 50 gallons of tap water this year, demonstrating the need for publicly available bottle refill stations.

Eliminating plastics in our community is a team effort:

  • An Arlington resident’s enthusiasm and local support led to Zero Waste Arlington’s proposal of the bylaw to ban sales of single-use plastic water bottles.
  • Partnership with town leaders will result in a network of water filling stations throughout town.
  • Leadership from state leaders provides financial support.
